  • Friends Charger

A friend of mine has this charger and it's quit working. He brought it to me at work this morning. He wants to know if it can be fixed. I have no idea.

Anybody messed with this charger before and if so give me some tips.

I sure will. He just gave it to me this morning in the parking lot at work. He said it's dead nothing. I looked on line this isn't a cheap charger. $600.00 for a new one. I will get pictures as soon as I can.

Here are some pictures of it.
As soon as you put the AC cord in the wall outlet it trips the breaker. I mean that quick! I didn't even get it all the way in 3 times and it blew the breaker.

This last picture is where the AC cord connects.

Andy what you have is a switching charger much like the ones in computers.

Get your nose close and smell for burned components. On the side with the 4 or 5 grey things check them out real good even check from pin to pin for shorts, in fact any component that mounts to the heat sink could be bad (shorted) .

Also your picture of the main power coming in is flaky in the picture use ohm meter to test for short on 120 vac line. keep track what you check I will look at the pictures more.

Andy also I not sure which breaker trips the house breaker or the breaker on the unit.

most likely will be power transistors (grey things I think) or diodes they will be shorted most likely causing the breaker to trip.

House breaker trips before I can get it plugged in good. I couldn't smell anything. AC cord itself are the part it plugs into on the charger? It looks like a 3 prong computer plug end on the charger. Thanks

I'm taking him one of my 48 volt chargers and letting him use it to charge for now with the SB connectors on it.

If its the house breaker then 120 volts input is bad.

could be the cord or most likely the part it plugs into.

How about I do a continuity check on the cord. The backside looks like it's melted and discolored.

This Is not the best way to do this BUT Disconnect the 3 wires coming out of the back of the receptacle And plug it back in If the breaker trips replace the cord and receptacle

I have a old cord that I could plug up to it and bypass the connections on the charger itself. I have one with the 3 spades already made up and just skip the 3 prong hookup on the backside of charger.

Unplugged it from the board and it didn't trip.

                                gaminde,
Can you tell me where to plug the green wire up in a Lestronic charger using his cord?

I know how to wire the white and black but if he buy's the charger I need it to use his cable.

I unpluged the 3 spades off there spots on the board. I left them in the back side of the plug in and then plugged it into the wall.
Do I need to start over and plug each spade back up until it trips.

I was also wanting to know where the green wire would hoop up at in the charger I loaned him in case he wants to buy it. It's a Lestronic 2 charger.

Talked to Jim at Yamaha today. The charger is Junk not fixable. As we all thought. Played phone tag most of the day but finally talked with him. he did say it maybe covered under warrinty though.

Green wire doesn't get used on the Lestronic charger it goes to the controller to keep from driving off with the charger plugged in.He said just cut off and tape it up. I have to wait to see if it's covered first though!
