Accelerator micro switch??

OK....on a 84 gas CC....I had to put a new accelerator micro-switch on because the cold temps. cracked the plastic and broke the old one. Here's my question. How does the open /close circuit work on it with it being open when you apply the brake...(thus shutting engine off) and also being open when you apply the accelerator pedal about half way? Am I adjusting it wrong?

It should activate as soon as you press the pedal about 1 inch. But it has nothing to do with the brake.
