If the reverse buzzer is sounding off but the clutch won't engage in reverse, there could be a few things at play. First off, let's make sure the basics are covered, check that the engine is revving up smoothly and the exhaust is heating up as expected. Assuming all's good on that front, it's time to dive into the shifter mechanism and cables. Take a close look to make sure they're shifting properly into gear. If everything seems shipshape there, disconnect the linkage on the transmission and try to manually shift it into gear. Still no luck? It's time to get under the cart. Jack it up, and drain the transmission oil for a closer inspection. Sometimes leaks or low fluid levels can cause issues, so it's worth checking. If no fluid comes out, operating the transmission without sufficient fluid is a recipe for disaster and could result in costly repairs or even the need for a full transmission replacement. If things still aren't adding up, you might need to crack open the rear assembly for a deeper dive.

The rear assembly on the 89 club car ds gas is a two part system. The differential takes about 22 ounces of 80-90wt. GL-5 gear lube, so make sure you're topping that up as needed. If you suspect the issue coming from the brake drum area or the transmission above the differential, it's worth investigating further. Try to pinpoint exactly where the issue is originating from, as that'll give you a better idea of where to focus your attention. Additionally, the transmission itself holds about 20 ounces of the same gear oil, so don't forget to check and maintain that too. Both the differential and transmission have drain and fill plugs, making it relatively easy to perform maintenance when needed. Let me know how it goes or if you need any more tips along the way.
