Won't Run

I have a G2E or G9E (not positive) I replaced the batteries and charged them overnight, When I turn the key to on, I get no power. Nothing, I used a volt meter and each battery only read between 1.6 and 1.7, is that normal? Any suggestions.

After a full charge and only getting 1.7 volts? That is not normal. You will be getting close to 8 volts out of a fully charged 6 volt battery. Are you sure the charger was plugged in and actually charging?
