  • 02 Ezgo will only run with choke on

I have a 02 Ezgo with a Robins EH29C and it will only run with the choke full on. I have replaced the carburetor, fuel pump and plugs new. Have checked the valve seals. Still have the problem. What should I also look for that could be the problem? Thank you in advance!

Aftermarket carburetors lack the fine tuning necessary for the specific requirements of the Robin EH29C engine, often resulting in improper fuel-air mixture ratios. When you run the engine with the choke fully engaged, you're essentially restricting the air intake, enriching the fuel mixture to compensate for the inadequate fuel delivery from the carburetor bowl. This restriction results in a higher concentration of fuel relative to air in the mixture that enters the combustion chamber. By enriching the fuel mixture in this way, you're compensating for any inadequacies in the fuel delivery from the carburetor. In other words, the choke helps to "over-fuel" the engine momentarily, providing a richer mixture that is easier to ignite and sustain combustion.

Return the aftermarket carburetor and buy direct from EZGO. If you happen to have the original carburetor, and it happens to be OEM (original equipment manufacturer) consider sending it to a golf cart or lawn mower shop to have it sonic cleaned. They'll focus on the carburetor's jets, which regulate fuel flow. These jets can become clogged or dirty, disrupting the proper fuel-air mixture. They will typically start by carefully disassembling the carburetor. They'll locate the jets, typically found in the main body of the carburetor, and inspect them for any buildup or obstructions. Then clean the jets thoroughly using a carburetor cleaner and a small wire to make sure the pinholes are completely clear. Then sonic clean. During sonic cleaning, the carburetor is submerged in a special cleaning solution and subjected to ultrasonic vibrations, which dislodge and dissolve stubborn deposits without damaging delicate parts.

Consider purchasing a rebuild kit and intake gaskets beforehand, (these kits typically includes new carburetor gaskets and other items to restore it to optimal condition). Intake gaskets create the seal between various intake components, preventing air leaks that can disrupt the delicate fuel-air mixture and lead to engine inefficiency. While you're working on the carburetor, it's also a good idea to pump out the tank and replace the old fuel with fresh gasoline and inspect and replace the air cleaner filter that may be worn or dirty. Over time, fuel can degrade, leading to poor engine performance and potentially clogging the new carburetor's jets. By replenishing the fuel with fresh gasoline, your engine is receiving fresh clean fuel for combustion. Be sure to check out this sticky which has tons of great discussion on the Robin EH29C and its quirks. If you have any questions or additional comments feel free to ask!
