confused

I purchased a 92 ex go golf cart. The batterys are good and have been load tested. When you step on the pedal it will jump one time and then nothing for a while. I took the speed controller off and went to get another at which time I was told it most likely was not the controller. There was a compaster broken off on the controller which I have ordered and there was a resistor that had rested and broken on the solinoid. I replaced the resistor and now waiting for the compastor. However when I put the reistor on the solinoid and turned the key on, it began to get very warm, actuall hot. I reveresed the resistor and it did the same thing. Any ideas what is going on here?
