Battery meter, forgot to ask

I forgot to ask if these are usually wired directly across the 36V output of the batteries. Mine reads very low on the gauge and I checked and it has only 31V across it. Looks like it is wired wrong. My battery voltage is +37V across the 6 batteries. The red wire has +37V to the Battery negative post and the black wire has +6V to the battery negative post instead of being 0V. Ted

I wire mine straight off the batteries, this way I can see what it is before I get on the cart to ride. Also when charging I know what is going on.

I too wire mine directly off the batts. the negative wire to the first battery and the positive to the last battery
