Early 80’s g1 golf cart issue

So I was given a early 80’s cart , cleaned it up to see if it was worth my time , my problem I am having is that the spark plug will get spark for about 2 seconds every time I push the gas, good compression , good battery , overall the cart should fire , I would appreciate anyone’s input on how to approach this or where to start , I would rather not throw a pile of money at this machine .
