Takes off and then dies like it's lost power

EZGO 36 volt batteries are good stay charged cart takes off like it's ready for business and then power diminishes within the first couple seconds and then won't go at all forward or reverse I'm assuming a short and I'm going out to mess with it now is there any way to check the speed controller with an ohmmeter or any other way
