  • what happen??- 36 volt 2002 been running great then loses power in a matter of minutes

We were just riding around the hood (80^ in early March in Middle Tennessee ) like usual and after a momentary stop cart starting losing power quickly- LED bar type charge gauge showed about 50% which seemed low for distance we had traveled. Turned it off then back on and then it showed to be pretty much 100% which would be more normal. We limped along and each time we stopped and let it sit for a few minutes cart would run a 100 yards losing power and we continued this until we limped home- We have had this cart couple years- believe batteries to be 2115 - based on sticker with "5" removed- suppose could be 2005- batteries have always shown a very even 7.6 VDC on one tester I use.
Voltage when we got home showed over 6 volts on all batteries with a uncharged total after the limp home at 37 VDC. I checked the cables- tight- with a tad of rust - no corrosion white stuff.
Pulling a hard charge right now at 20 amps-
We keep in garage and charge / use maybe once a month during winter- this is wife's island toy- roads only not on beach- totally stock except lights-
I have a 12 VDC 100 amp load type battery tester- one of them that gets glowing orange and hot inside- I could check 2 batteries at one time (to get 12 VDC) under load-
Need to get this fixed- if momma ain't happy - nobody happy !!

    Hello Circlehook,

Welcome to Golf Carts Forum. The batteries usually last 4-5 years, any battery older than this is on borrowed time. 4 new batteries in the near future should get momma smiling riding around the hood once again

Sorry, for some reason I thought we were discussing a much newer EZGO.

Healthy batteries should read 8 VDC each fully charged. 6 would mean a few cells in each battery have gone and went to heaven.

Please note I am newbie with my first cart- so newer carts have 4 @ what 9VDC? 4 X 9 = 36 ?? I think I overfilled the cells with water last summer- I fill to top of breather slot- should I try to remove some acid- too late? I did use correct water. Picking up a load type battery tester with 6 VDC range today- what should I be looking for fully charged?

Manufacturers put 4 12 volt batteries in newer golf carts. I wouldn't worry about the water, always use distilled and keep them slightly below topped off. A fully healthy charged 6 volt battery will read 7.40-7.80 volts. A fully charged 8 volt battery 9.40-9.80 volts and 12 volt fully charged 13.40-13.80. If it is not putting out these readings, its a sure sign that the battery has expired.

Ok - I guess I am getting new batteries- Sam's club has best prices I found - brand is Duracells - any issues with these?

Did I see something about using 8 volt battiers X 6 in a 36 volt cart? What is involved? Any benifit?
